Mists and Elephants: 3 Days in Northern Thailand from Chiang Mai

Northern Thailand is a completely different country from the islands or Bangkok. The mountains are shrouded in morning mist, the climate lets you breathe deeply. Hiring a car and driving around the Chiang Mai region will be the most spiritual and visually stunning experience of your trip.

Safety and Mindset

Safety Index: High

The northern people (Lanna ethnic group) are famous for their calm, courtesy and incredible hospitality. Travelling through the mountains, you will encounter no discomfort at all. The key is respect for shrines and nature.

Day 1: The Roof of Thailand — Doi Inthanon

09:00 — Doi Inthanon National Park The highest point in Thailand (about 1.5 hours from Chiang Mai).

11:00 — Two Chedis and Jungle Visit the two royal pagodas above the clouds with stunning flower gardens. Walk the Kew Mae Pan trail (2 hours). Misty moss forests, like something from The Lord of the Rings, reveal views of the whole valley. (Bring a warm jacket: it can be as cool as +10°C at the summit!)

Northern Thailand — Doi Inthanon, Mae Taeng, Chiang Rai

Day 2: Ethical Elephant Encounters

09:00 — Elephant Nature Park Visit the Elephant Nature Park (Mae Taeng valley). A sanctuary that rescues elephants from circuses. Prepare food for them (bananas and pumpkins), feed them by hand and watch them bathe in the river. A moving and emotional experience.

Day 3: The Surrealism of Chiang Rai

13:00 — White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) A modern work of art by a Thai artist. Snow-white and covered in mirrors — a symbol of purity. Walking across the bridge over the "ocean of reaching hands" leaves an indelible impression.

16:00 — Mae Kachan Hot Springs On the way back — natural hot springs. Rest your tired legs in the thermal pools.

Practical Tips

Northern roads are excellent, but the mountain switchbacks require confident driving. Hire a local driver with a minivan for 3 days (~$60-80 per day) for total freedom.
