Ocean, Bridges, and Dragons: 24 Hours in Modern Da Nang
Asia / Itineraries / City Break
Vietnam · Da Nang
Da Nang is the showcase of modern Vietnam. Wide avenues, futuristic bridges across the Han River, sparkling skyscrapers, and dozens of kilometres of pristine white beaches along the South China Sea. If Hanoi breathes history and Ho Chi Minh City breathes commerce, then Da Nang is the perfect resort metropolis. The city is incredibly clean, convenient, and spacious. For LGBTQ+ travelers, Da Nang serves as an excellent base with well-developed infrastructure, chic rooftop bars, and a relaxed beach atmosphere.
Safety and Atmosphere
Safety Index: Medium (8.5/10)
Da Nang is a rapidly developing, young city. The queer scene here is not as massive as in Ho Chi Minh City, but the local youth and a growing community of digital nomads make the atmosphere incredibly tolerant. In the bars near My Khe Beach, you will meet a very international and friendly crowd. The rules are the same: avoid overt PDA in public, but feel completely safe anywhere in the city.
Morning: The Hands of God and Marble Caves
07:30 — Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge
The symbol of Da Nang is the Golden Bridge, held by two giant stone hands. It is located in the Ba Na Hills theme park high in the mountains.
Critical Tip: By 10 AM in summer, the bridge turns into a sea of tourists with selfie sticks. Leave your hotel at 7:00 AM to catch the first cable car — which itself is an engineering marvel in the Guinness Book of Records — and take perfect photos in the mist without the crowds.
13:00 — Marble Mountains
Coming down from the clouds, stop by the Marble Mountains on your way to the beach. This is a complex of five limestone peaks named after the five elements. Inside, Buddhist temples are hidden in enormous caves. Climb to the top of Thuy Son (Water Mountain) for a stunning view of the coast.
Afternoon: Surfing and My Khe Beach
15:30 — My Khe Beach
Forbes magazine once named this beach one of the most beautiful in the world. A wide strip of white sand and warm water. Da Nang is also the centre of Vietnamese surfing. Take a surf lesson or just relax at a beach bar like Esco Beach, enjoying fresh seafood.

Evening and Night: Fire and Neon
20:45 — The Dragon Bridge Fire Show
The Dragon Bridge is Da Nang's architectural pride. Every weekend (Saturday and Sunday) at exactly 9:00 PM, the Dragon literally comes alive: it breathes real fire and water! Grab a spot on the promenade early or book a table on the roof of a nearby hotel.
22:00 — Queer-Friendly Spots
Da Nang does not have a dedicated gay district, but it has incredibly cool community spots:
- Section 30: An iconic open-air craft bar. It is the main gathering place for local progressive youth, LGBTQ+ expats, and creatives. Great burgers, craft beer, and DJs.
- Sky36: If you want glamour, go to the highest rooftop bar in Vietnam. The dress code is strict and prices are steep, but the panorama of nighttime Da Nang and the ocean from the 36th floor is worth it.
