The Island of Eternal Spring: 24 Hours on Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is not merely an island in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa. It is a place where the meteorological spring never ends, and the LGBTQ+ community has built an entire empire of comfort and freedom.

The south of the island — Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés — has been a year-round refuge for European queer travellers for several decades. If you are here for just 24 hours, prepare for a day where golden dunes flow seamlessly into champagne pools and the evening's drag shows are breathtaking in scale.

Safety and Atmosphere

Safety Index: High

Gran Canaria is one of the few places on earth where heterosexual tourists can feel like a minority in certain areas. Yumbo Centrum and the surrounding hotels are entirely oriented towards LGBTQ+ guests. Relax, set aside social conventions and simply enjoy life.

Route Map

Gran Canaria — Maspalomas Dunes, Kiosk 7, Playa del Inglés, Yumbo

Day: Dunes, Sand and Kiosk 7

11:00 — A Desert by the Ocean

Leave your bags at the hotel and head to the nature reserve: the Maspalomas Dunes (Dunas de Maspalomas). A vast expanse of golden sand that feels like the Sahara. Walking through the dunes is a meditative experience and the best photography location on the island.

13:00 — The Epicentre of Beach Life: Kiosk 7

Make your way to the water. Your destination is the famous Kiosk 7 — the island's official gay beach (and nudist beach). The atmosphere is wonderfully welcoming, the music is good, rainbow flags flutter everywhere. Order a cocktail straight from the kiosk, drop your swimwear and join the hundreds of men and women relaxing on the sand.

Evening and Night: The Yumbo Empire

20:00 — Dinner in Meloneras

After a full day in the sun, change into something smart and head to the Meloneras waterfront. This is the more upscale, contemporary district near the lighthouse. Dine at one of the seafront restaurants with ocean views: $50–70 / €45–65 for two.

23:00 — Yumbo Centrum: Open All Night

The heart of the island's LGBTQ+ nightlife is Yumbo Centrum in Playa del Inglés. By day it is an ordinary open-air shopping centre; by night it transforms into a vast, pulsating club.

Begin the evening in the lounge bars on the ground floor (Eiffel Bar, Mantle). As midnight approaches, move to the stages where professional drag shows take place (Ricky's Cabaret). For dancing and cruising until dawn, the clubs Mantrix and numerous basement bars are ready and waiting.
