Emerald Dragons: 3 Days from Hanoi to Ha Long & Ninh Binh
Asia / Itineraries / Road Trips
Vietnam · Hanoi
Hanoi is beautiful, but the true treasures of Northern Vietnam are hidden beyond the capital. If you have 3 days, this circular route lets you experience two of the most breathtaking landscapes in Asia: the famous Ha Long Bay, with thousands of karst islands rising from emerald waters, and Ninh Binh province — often called "Ha Long on land." For LGBTQ+ couples, this route is a chance to escape the city, enjoy absolute romance on a wooden ship, and glide through ancient caves by lantern light.
Safety and Privacy on the Cruise
Safety on this route: High
The tourism infrastructure in Ha Long and Ninh Binh caters to international travelers. Staff on premium cruises are trained to high international standards — same-sex couples checking into a double-bed cabin will not encounter any issues. In Ninh Binh villages the same rule applies: avoid overt PDA and you will be treated with maximum hospitality.
Day 1: The Dream Cruise — Lan Ha Bay
08:00 — Transfer from Hanoi
Leave your large suitcases at your Hanoi hotel and take only light backpacks. The drive to the coast takes about 2.5 hours via the new highway.
12:00 — Ha Long's Secret: Lan Ha Bay
Top tip
Classic Ha Long Bay suffers from overtourism. To avoid hundreds of old boats and polluted water, book a cruise in Lan Ha Bay — a neighbouring, geologically identical bay that is far cleaner, quieter, and more exclusive.
After checking into a premium cabin with panoramic windows and a private balcony, you sail among giant green cliffs. By day, kayak through karst arches; by evening, drink wine on the upper deck as the sun sets behind the dragon's teeth.

Day 2: From Water to Land — Ninh Binh
11:30 — Disembark and Transfer
After morning Tai Chi on deck and a leisurely brunch, the cruise returns to port. From there, take a pre-booked private transfer to Ninh Binh province (about 3 hours south).
16:00 — Rice Paddies of Tam Coc
Ninh Binh features the same limestone mountains — but rising from vivid green rice paddies instead of the sea. After checking in, take free bicycles from the eco-resort and ride along the paths between the cliffs at sunset.
Day 3: Caves, Boats and Dragons
08:00 — Trang An Boat Tour
Arrive at the Trang An complex right at opening to avoid crowds. Local women row the wooden sampan boats using their feet. You glide through a dozen lantern-lit caves, emerging into hidden valleys with ancient temples.
14:00 — Ascending the Dragon (Hang Mua)
Before returning to Hanoi, climb Hang Mua mountain — 500 stone steps. The view from the top over the Ngo Dong River valley is the finest panorama in Vietnam. A stone dragon guards the summit.
Your driver will return you to Hanoi around 18:00.
