Water World: 3 Days in the Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh City
Asia / Itineraries / Road Trips
Vietnam · Ho Chi Minh City
When the chaos and traffic jams of Saigon begin to tire you, it's time to head south. The Mekong Delta is a vast water labyrinth known as the «rice bowl» of Vietnam. Life here flows on rivers, not roads: houses stand on stilts, markets float on the water, and the banks are overgrown with thick coconut palms.
For LGBTQ+ couples, a 3-day trip to the Mekong Delta is an opportunity to immerse yourselves in authentic rural Vietnamese life, enjoy the privacy of premium riverside eco-lodges, and experience a completely different, meditative rhythm of Asia.
Safety and Privacy
Safety and Privacy: High (9/10)
Life in the Mekong provinces flows conservatively and peacefully. There is no queer scene here, but the level of safety and hospitality is a solid 9/10. Locals are incredibly welcoming. The premium boutique hotels and eco-lodges we recommend provide an absolute safe space for same-sex couples. The main rule outside the hotel: modest clothing in villages and no overt PDA.
Day 1: The Canals of Ben Tre
09:00 — Escape from Saigon
The transfer from Saigon to Ben Tre province takes about 2 hours.
12:00 — On a Sampan Through the Jungle
Ben Tre is famous for its coconut plantations. Transfer to a traditional wooden boat (sampan). You will slowly glide through narrow canals overgrown with giant Nipa palms, whose leaves form a green tunnel overhead. You will stop at a local workshop to see how coconut candy and rice paper are made.
16:00 — Check-in at the Eco-Lodge
In the afternoon, check into your boutique hotel right on the riverbank. Enjoy the silence, the song of cicadas, and the sunset with an ice-cold cocktail.
Ho Chi Minh — Ben Tre — Can Tho: 3-day route
Day 2: Cai Rang Floating Market (Can Tho)
05:30 — At Sunrise
You have an early wake-up call. To see the authentic Cai Rang floating market in Can Tho city, you need to be on the water by 7 AM. It is the largest wholesale water market in the delta. Hundreds of boats, loaded to the brim with pineapples, watermelons, and mangoes, trade with each other. Buy a bowl of hot Pho soup right from a neighbouring boat — it's an unforgettable breakfast!
14:00 — Biking Through Villages
After resting at the hotel, grab bicycles and go for a ride along rural paths. You will pass tropical fruit orchards, old wooden bridges, and smiling children shouting «Hello!». In the evening, participate in a cooking class at your hotel and learn to make fresh spring rolls.
Day 3: Return to Saigon
Spend the morning relaxing by the pool or visiting a local pagoda. After lunch, your driver will comfortably return you to Ho Chi Minh City.
Why You Shouldn't Skimp
A life hack that will save your vacation: in Ho Chi Minh City, you will be offered cheap 1-day bus tours to the Mekong for $20. Never take them. You will spend 6 hours in a cramped bus, be herded through souvenir shops in a crowd of 50 people, and return exhausted.
For a comfortable, romantic, and ethical experience, book a private 2- or 3-day tour with a personal guide and boat. It's an investment in your emotions and comfort.
