Aegean Aesthetics: 4 Days on Paros and Antiparos for LGBTQ+ Travellers

You stand on the ferry deck as the salty Aegean wind tangles your hair. Paros appears on the horizon — an island bathed in soft light, whitewashed cubic houses stepping down to turquoise water. The moment you step ashore at Parikia port, you are enveloped in the scent of charcoal-grilled octopus and flowering purple bougainvillea.

For years, LGBTQ+ island-hoppers in the Cyclades divided into two camps: those chasing wild parties on Mykonos, and those hunting sunsets on Santorini. But over the last few years a tectonic shift has happened. Queer travellers who want impeccable style, premium dining and pristine beaches — without the crowds, the all-night raves and the eye-watering prices — have discovered Paros and its tiny neighbour, Antiparos.

Paros is often called "Mykonos fifteen years ago". This is where elegance meets authenticity. With three or four nights, this itinerary will give you the perfect island escape with just the right dose of understated chic.

Safety and Atmosphere

Safety Index: High

In the fishing village of Naoussa and on the main beaches you are in a completely safe environment. Same-sex couples walk hand in hand along the cobbled lanes, have candlelit dinners and dance in bars without a second thought. The atmosphere is less sexualised than Mykonos but every bit as inclusive. European designers, Hollywood actors (Tom Hanks, for instance, has a home on Antiparos) and a large share of LGBTQ+ couples from around the world all make Paros their summer base.

Route Map

Paros and Antiparos — Naoussa, Kolymbithres, Santa Maria, Lefkes

Day 1: The Magic of Naoussa

14:00 — Arrival and Check-In

Your ferry docks at Parikia (the capital), but head straight north to Naoussa. Check in, change into light linen and go get happily lost in the labyrinth of whitewashed lanes.

18:30 — Sunset at the Venetian Harbour

Naoussa was built around an old Venetian port. By day, fishermen beat freshly caught octopus against the stone to tenderise it; by evening the same spot becomes a catwalk. Claim a table at the iconic Sommariba Consolato bar, perched on a balcony directly over the water. Order a signature mastic cocktail, drift on the soft deep house, and watch the setting sun turn the white fishing boats pink.

21:00 — Dinner at the Water's Edge

Taverna tables here sit literally thirty centimetres from the sea — waves occasionally lap at your shoes. Book at Mario or Barbarossa. Dinner for two with wine: $80–110 / €75–100. The quality of the seafood and the setting are worth every cent.

Day 2: Lunar Granite and Beach House Vibes

10:30 — Kolymbithres Beach

Paros's most famous beach is unique for its smooth, sculpted granite boulders, worn for millennia by wind and water until they look like a lunar landscape easing gently into crystal-clear sea. Get here by the small wooden water taxi from Naoussa harbour — far more romantic than the bus.

15:00 — Santa Maria and Queer Energy

In the afternoon, move on to Santa Maria Beach: a long sweep of golden sand with excellent beach clubs. The vibe is young, the house music is good and the concentration of LGBTQ+ visitors is high. Order an Aperol Spritz, rent a stand-up paddleboard, or simply flirt with the people on the neighbouring sun loungers.

Day 3: Escape to Antiparos

Being on Paros and skipping Antiparos is a crime. This tiny satellite island has preserved an even more relaxed, alternative atmosphere.

10:00 — The Crossing

Drive to Pounta port on the western coast of Paros. The ferry to Antiparos takes just seven minutes and runs every half hour — you can take your hired scooter or car with you.

11:30 — Cave, Beach and an Evening in Hora

Descend into the famous Antiparos cave, whose stalactites are millions of years old. Then head to Beach House Antiparos in Apantima bay for a superb boho lunch in a completely inclusive setting. In the late afternoon, stroll down the single main street of Antiparos Hora — incredible concept stores selling handmade clothing. End the evening at Boogaloo bar: intimate atmosphere, good music, exactly the mood this island calls for.

The most beautiful way to see the Blue Lagoons between Paros and Antiparos — unreachable by land — is a sailing cruise.

Day 4: Mountain Cool in Lefkes

11:00 — The Island's Secret Capital

Before leaving, head inland into the hills. The village of Lefkes was once the island's capital, built high up to protect against pirates. There is no sea here, but there are dense pine forests, marble paving stones, old windmills and extraordinary quiet. Sit in the traditional kafeneio on the square, order a cold frappé and a slice of homemade lemon cake. The perfect place to slow down, scroll through your photos and appreciate just how beautiful this trip has been.

Practical Tips

Transport: Hiring a quad bike (ATV) or small car is strongly recommended — the KTEL buses limit your freedom. Driving a Fiat 500 along the island's winding roads gives you a real sense of island liberation.

Getting there: A domestic flight from Athens (40 minutes) or a high-speed ferry from Piraeus (3–4 hours). Critical: in July–August, tickets for ferries (Seajets, Blue Star) sell out weeks in advance — book online well ahead.

Dating apps: Grindr and Tinder are active around Naoussa and Santa Maria, but the vibe here is more "grab a coffee and chat" than quick hookups. Most users are couples or groups of friends on holiday together.

FAQ

Paros or Mykonos — which to choose? It depends on what you're after. Mykonos delivers club nights and glamour. Paros offers relaxed boho chic, great food and genuine authenticity — without the sky-high prices and the crowds.

Do restaurants in Naoussa need booking? Yes, especially in July–August. The best waterfront tables at Mario and Barbarossa fill up days in advance.

Paros is an island that doesn't shout about itself. It wins you over gently — through the taste of salt on your lips, cool marble underfoot and long evenings in Naoussa. A place you come to simply in order to love: yourself, your partner, and life itself.
