Art, Tea, and Architecture: 24 Hours in Taichung

Asia / Itineraries / City Break

Taiwan · Taichung

·11 min

Taichung, located in the very heart of Taiwan, is often called the cultural and creative capital of the island. If you appreciate modern architecture, indie culture, massive art spaces, and great food — after all, this is where the famous «bubble tea» was invented — Taichung will steal your heart. The city lacks the frantic hustle of Taipei; its streets are greener, and the pace of life is perfect for a relaxed weekend. The queer community here is young, artistic, and very inclusive.

Safety and Atmosphere

Safety Index: High (10/10)

Taiwan was the first country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage, and Taichung fully embraces these progressive values. Famous for its many universities, the city has a very collegiate, liberal, and open atmosphere. You can feel completely safe hugging your partner in a park or holding hands at the night market.

Morning: Rainbows and Pearls

09:00 — Rainbow Village

Start your day at Taiwan's most Instagrammable spot. This old veterans' village was slated for demolition until one of its residents («Rainbow Grandpa») began painting all the houses, walls, and pavement with bright, surreal patterns. His art saved the village! It's a stunning, uplifting place perfect for morning photos.

11:30 — The Birthplace of Bubble Tea: Chun Shui Tang

Head to the Chun Shui Tang teahouse (Original Store). This is where, in the 1980s, black tea, milk, ice, and tapioca pearls were first mixed together, creating the Bubble Tea that the whole world drinks today. Be sure to order the classic pearl milk tea and traditional dim sum.

Afternoon: Urbanism and Greenery

14:00 — National Taichung Theater

Designed by renowned Japanese architect Toyo Ito, this building looks like something from the future. There is not a single straight wall inside — everything consists of curved «caves» and white concrete. Inside the theater, there are excellent design shops and a stylish cafe.

16:00 — Calligraphy Greenway

Right in the city center stretches a green belt known as the Calligraphy Greenway. It's the favourite meeting place for local bohemians. The park is surrounded by hipster coffee shops, galleries, and small local designer boutiques. It's the perfect place for a leisurely stroll.

Taichung — Rainbow Village, National Theater, Fengjia Night Market

Evening and Night: Night Market and Indie Bars

19:00 — Fengjia Night Market

This is one of the largest night markets in all of Taiwan. Located next to a university, it is a hub of culinary innovation. Many street food trends that later spread across Asia first appear right here.

22:00 — Taichung's Queer Scene

Taichung does not have a dedicated gay district like Taipei's Red House, but it has several great spots.

  • PLUTO: The most famous and popular LGBTQ+ club in the city. Great music, themed parties, and a friendly young crowd.
  • MicroMatch: A cosy craft bar, very friendly. Ideal for those who want to sit with a cocktail and chat in a relaxed setting.
