Asia's Beacon of Freedom: 24 Hours in Queer Taipei

Asia / Itineraries / City Break

Taiwan · Taipei

·10 min

The air in Taipei is a thick, humid blend of street food aromas, incense from Taoist temples, and the freshness of a tropical downpour. As you step onto the streets of this metropolis, you are enveloped by the soft glow of neon reflecting in the puddles. For LGBTQ+ travelers, Taiwan in 2026 is not just an interesting spot on the map — it is an absolute, shining beacon of freedom. Taiwan became the first country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage, and later adoption rights for queer couples. Here, our community is not simply "tolerated" — it is celebrated.

Safety and Atmosphere

Safety Index: 10/10

Taipei is one of the safest cities in the world. Queer couples can hold hands, hug on the MRT, or share a kiss in the park — completely safe and perfectly normal. Taiwanese people are incredibly polite, friendly, and deeply respectful of personal space.

Morning: Taoism and Skyscrapers

09:00 — Longshan Temple

Start your day in the historic Wanhua District. Longshan Temple is a masterpiece of Taiwanese architecture. Grab some incense, listen to the rhythmic chanting of the monks, and breathe in the sandalwood. It is the ideal place for some morning Zen.

11:30 — Bamboo and Clouds (Taipei 101)

Head over to Taipei 101, the iconic skyscraper resembling a giant bamboo stalk.

Pro tip on queues

The lines for the observation deck can be brutal. To avoid wasting precious hours of your 24-hour trip, book your ticket online in advance — or grab it with the tour below.

Afternoon: Gastronomy and Ximending

14:00 — Lunch at Din Tai Fung

Right at the base of Taipei 101 is the legendary Din Tai Fung. You must order the xiaolongbao — steamed dumplings filled with savory hot broth. Lunch for two: around $35–50 / €32–48.

16:00 — Ximending District

Move to Ximending, Taipei's Harajuku: giant screens, street performers, and endless boutiques. The energy here is addictive.

Ximending — Taipei's queer epicentre

Evening and Night: The Red House

19:00 — Raohe Night Market

Taipei is famous for its night markets. Try the black pepper bun and the grilled king oyster mushrooms before heading out for the night.

22:00 — The Epicenter of Freedom: The Red House

Head back to Ximending. Behind the historic octagonal red-brick building lies an outdoor square made up entirely of LGBTQ+ bars and terraces. This is the most vibrant and open queer space in Asia. Grab a table outside at Café Dalida — the crowd is an amazing international mix of locals, expats, and drag queens.

Where to Stay

Stay in the Ximending district — you can safely walk back from The Red House after drinks.
