About the country

Spain is one of the world's leaders in LGBTQ+ rights protection and a country with an incredibly warm, festive atmosphere. The social climate is characterised by absolute acceptance, making every city and resort a safe space. LGBTQ+ travellers are drawn to the massive queer scenes in Madrid and Barcelona, as well as the opportunity to experience complete social equality.

LGBTQ+ in this country

Spain legalised same-sex marriage in 2005, one of the first countries in the world to do so. In 2023 a gender self-determination law was passed, allowing gender changes without medical intervention. Madrid Pride (World Pride) is one of the largest in the world, and Chueca in Madrid and Gayxample in Barcelona are globally renowned LGBTQ+ neighbourhoods.
